In the United States, corn is the principal raw material; in Brazil, the world's leading ethanol producer, sugar cane is widely used. In the United States, Ethanol Futures are available for Trading in The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT®). According to the harmonised classification and labelling (CLP00) approved by the European Union, this substance is a highly flammable liquid and vapour. Estimated EU consumption of renewable ethanol for fuel increased by 10% between 2017 and 2019, from 3,9 million tonnes to 4,3 million tonnes. In the same period, however, world production of renewable ethanol for fuel passed from 80,6 million tonnes to 87,5 million tonnes.

Ethanol is produced by yeast fermentation of the sugar extracted from sugar cane. Sugarcane production in the United States occurs in Florida, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Texas. In prime growing regions, such as Hawaii, sugarcane can produce 20 kg for each square meter exposed to the sun.

Compared to fossil petrol, ethanol reduces particulate matter emissions by up to 80 percent with E10, a fuel blend that contains up to 10 percent ethanol.
